International Water Summit (IWS) @ Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre
Jan 16 – Jan 19 all-day

The world uses almost 87 million cubic metres of desalinated water every day, and the MENA region accounts for 44% of that figure, according to the International Desalination Association. In the GCC, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait and Qatar are all among the world’s 10 largest users of desalination. Yet the GWI Desalination Markets 2016 report notes that the region relies heavily on thermal desalination powered by fossil fuels. In 2015, the UAE used thermal processes for around 88% of its desalinated water, with just 12% from more efficient methods such as reverse osmosis. The global figure is 29% for thermal systems and 71% for reverse osmosis.

Hosted by Masdar, this year’s Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) will be a significant milestone in changing these statistics and decoupling the region’s water supply from fossil fuel use. In 2015, Masdar began operating four small-scale desalination plants at Ghantoot, between Abu Dhabi City and Dubai, as part of its Renewable Energy Desalination Pilot Programme. Each plant is testing a different desalination process – three based on reverse osmosis, one using forward osmosis – to identify the most efficient technologies to be coupled with solar energy. The data from the pilot programme will be published as part of ADSW, offering policy makers and industry a path forward to achieve environmentally sustainable water security.

As part of ADSW, and held in partnership with Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, the International Water Summit (IWS) from January 16 to 19 is dedicated to closing the sustainability gap in the region’s water supply. Now in its fifth edition, IWS is the Middle East’s leading exhibition and conference for water security, located alongside the World Future Energy Summit (WFES). IWS 2017 will host high-level decision makers from water utilities across the MENA region, creating an essential market for innovations in both water production, and in water conservation, including infrastructure improvements and waste water recycling.

IWS is a global platform for promoting water sustainability in arid regions, bringing together world leaders, field experts, academics and business innovators to accelerate the development of new sustainable strategies and technologies. Importantly, IWS is built on the principle that the best way to achieve sustainable development is to build a sound business case for investment.

Mark your calendars today for 16-19 January 2017, and we look forward to welcoming you to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre!

RetrofitTech UAE Summit & Awards @ Dubai
Mar 20 – Mar 21 all-day

The retrofitting of existing buildings to greener standards is widely recognized as a key step in the sustainable development of a nation’s economy.

The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy has set the goal of reducing energy demand by 30% by 2030. To achieve this goal, retrofitting and refurbishing existing buildings has been identified as a core strategy to reduce overall energy demand.

RetrofitTech UAE Summit & Awards will give an update on UAE’s retrofit programme for buildings to lower water and electricity demands, identify upcoming projects and requirements, and give a snapshot on the emerging opportunities in new sectors or markets through innovative conference formats.

The summit is officially supported by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, TAQATI and Etihad ESCO and will be held on 20-21 March 2017 in Dubai, UAE.

This prestigious event will include a dedicated awards ceremony to recognise and celebrate excellence and achievements in this field.

UAE is undergoing a major facelift

Several government-backed entities in Dubai have signed contracts worth around $20 million to make environmental improvements to their real estate portfolios.

In April 2016, the UAE Ministry of Energy announced that it is working on a project to retrofit almost 4,000 federal government buildings and a further 30,000 buildings in Dubai with low-energy technologies, including lighting.

Developers, building owners, and BOAs are looking at retrofitting buildings in the residential sector. At the same time, there are several ongoing projects across the retail sector which have either undergone retrofitting or are undergoing retrofitting. They include malls and leisure and entertainment projects.

Retrofitting hotels might become a requirement since the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) in Dubai is finalising framework and guidelines to ensure that hotels meet their energy efficiency KPIs.

The healthcare and education sectors are also undergoing retrofitting. Hospitals including Sharjah Teaching Hospital and Issat Omran and universities like AUD and Zayed University have already started retrofitting.

Why take part in RetrofitTech UAE Summit & Awards?

This summit is being launched to identify future retrofit opportunities and the latest technologies for driving energy and water efficiency as well as ROI across multiple sectors.

This unique and timely event will bring together the relevant government bodies, energy efficiency industry experts, developers, consultants and solution providers.

Webinar: The impact of the 9.45 US$ cents CSP bid on the MENA region
Jun 20 @ 2:00 pm

The webinar, taking place online on Tuesday 20th of June, 2017 at 2pm time in Dubai, is free to attend and it is organized by the World Bank MENA CSP Knowledge & Innovation Program. Places are free but limited, offered on a first come first served basis at

The recent tender of the CSP project in Dubai DEWA 200MW has achieved a record low PPA of 9.45 US$ cents per kWh and has shifted the ground of how cheap dispatchable renewable energy can change the entire MENA region.

There is no denying that the DEWA tender marks a before and after for the CSP industry. By reaching 9.45 US$ cents per kWh, this tender has brought CSP into the single digits for the first time. The question remains of how the extensive cost reduction can be replicated through the MENA region.

Considering that CSP has the value of being dispatchable – that is, it is flexible to provide energy round the clock when it is needed thanks to thermal storage – this low price point could bring greater flexibility opportunity to power planners and grid managers across the region.

The webinar offers an in-depth analysis of the implications and the opportunities arising from this low bid for utilities, grid operators, governments, and developers:

  • Expert analysis of what the latest Dubai PPA means for CSP in the MENA region, considering renewable energy programs, energy costs and the particularities of national power systems
  • Clear understanding of the system value of CSP in comparison to peak load renewables – and how regional grids would benefit from adding CSP capacity
  • Industry insiders’ expectations of further CSP cost reductions, given its learning curve and increasing scale brought about by investments by DEWA (1 GW), Saudi Arabia (1 GW), and China (5 GW) among others

Top industry experts Paddy Padmanathan, CEO of ACWA Power, Jenny Chase, Manager of Solar Insight at Bloomberg New Energy Finance & Frank Wouters from the MENA CSP Knowledge & Innovation Program will analyze solar opportunities in depth and how CSP fits in.

To sign up for this webinar please register for free

Places are limited and they will be awarded on first-come, first-served basis.

About MENA CSP Knowledge & Innovation Program

The MENA CSP Knowledge & Innovation Program aims to accelerate CSP investments in the MENA region. Launched in late 2016 by the Clean Technology Fund (CTF) and the World Bank, this three-year Program has these primary objectives:

  • Addressing knowledge and awareness gaps
  • Linking projects with sources of finance and technical advice
  • Promoting innovation to enable CSP investments in MENA to move forward faster, and in more countries

The knowledge generated in MENA could also facilitate CSP investments elsewhere in the world, creating a virtuous circle of CSP investments and cost reductions through global economies of scale and learning.

mCoin reaches 5.8 billion people on mobiles of whom 3 billion people don’t have internet access

mCoin ( is the world’s first cryptocurrency accessible to 3 billion people without Internet. The official mCoin ICO launch will be on April 16th. The World Blockchain Forum is the biggest blockchain event held this year in Dubai.

The ongoing pre-ICO sale has already attracted participants from more than 30 countries. This is a very good sign for success in the upcoming ICO.

mCoin works with ONEm ( services making blockchain technology available on any mobile.

ONEm founded in 2012, developed and deployed a revolutionary mobile platform. The platform allowed mobiles without the internet to enjoy internet-like services. These applications solved everyday problems facing individuals and businesses. This creates a new opportunity to reach an untapped market with billions of people.

mCoin is unique. It reaches 5.8 billion people on mobiles of whom 3 billion people don’t have internet access. mCoin is secure because it is not on the internet creating an extra layer of security.

The demand for mCoin will rise due to mCoin’s novel mining concept. “Pseudo-mining” is a proof-of-work concept where anybody can earn mCoins through sponsored activities. These special purpose activities impact society in a positive way. Users can spend mCoins through ONEm’s Sweb, Market Place and mCatalogue applications.

To foster mCoins’ rapid growth, ONEm has signed telco agreements in more than 20 countries. This figure can double during the current year. Small and medium businesses can work with local mCoin partners. For the first time hundreds of millions of people worldwide can enjoy a digital currency. As a result, mCoin will increase in value where traditional cryptocurrencies can’t reach.

Christopher Richardson, CEO and Co-founder of ONEm stated. “It is exciting to see that mCoin’s pre-ICO has attracted so many participants. This is a good sign for the launch of our upcoming ICO on April 16 at The World Blockchain Forum in Dubai. We are looking forward to meeting current and new mCoin supporters.”

The 6th International Smart Grids and Cities Congress and Fair @ Istanbul Congress Center
Apr 25 – Apr 26 all-day

The 6th International Smart Grids and Cities Congress and Fair, which will be held with the support of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications as well as the Energy Market Regulatory Authority and in strategic partnership with ELDER (Association of Electricity Distribution System Operators) and GAZ-BIR (Natural Gas Distribution Companies Association), will open its doors at Istanbul Congress Center on April 25 and 26, 2018.

The 6th International Smart Grids and Cities Congress and Fair, which will be assembling the stakeholders of the energy industry, to which nearly 350 global corporations will attend as booth exhibitors, and of which the United Kingdom is a Country Partner, is expected to be attended by over 10 thousand industry representatives, experts and academicians from more than 50 countries.

Turkey’s current grid infrastructure, now, hardly meets the needs as it is based on the 90’s technology. Therefore, our country has been renovating the infrastructural systems, choosing the state-of-the-art technology, which is also preferred worldwide. The experts state that it is critically important throughout the transformation process that mutual communication between the supplier and the user should be ensured, the supply and consumption should be monitored by way of the integration of smart meters and monitoring systems to power and gas networks, and continuous, reliable and quality power transmission to the users should be assured. The transformation of currently existing systems into smart systems is considered essential in order to both enable excellent consumer satisfaction and prevent losses and inefficiency through the remote monitoring of grids.

The experts, who note that smart grids will contribute the most to the economy and the consumers, emphasize that reduction in the number and the duration of outages, savings in operational costs and integration to the grid of renewable energy resources, which account for a considerable portion within energy production, will also become more efficient by way of smart grids and smart systems.

The experts, who state those smart systems will also contribute to the protection of the environment, comment as follows; “A significant result of this will be experienced directly by the consumers. The quality of the power used will increase while energy procurement costs will drop. These systems will enable individuals not to remain solely as consumers but to generate power by way of the solar panels that could install on the roofs of their homes and contribute to the grids. This congress and fair, which is being held through the course of transformation to smart system of Turkey with a population of some 80 million people, where there are 35 million water subscribers, 35 million power subscribers and 10 million gas subscribers, will serve as an international platform, were exhibitors will be assembled with all stakeholders, have their inquiries addressed, learn about the latest developments in smart systems, witness model applications and determine their investment strategies.”
